Samsung Star S5233 review

After months of dillydallying about buying a new mobile phone, I was yet to make up my mind, but fate decided to put an end to my dilemma. My old faithful Nokia 3230 conked off again and any I didn't have the mood to resurrect it again by spending more money. After a feverish research on the web for a couple of days and coming within minutes from buying a Nokia E63, I finally ended up with a Samsung Star S5233. Samsung Star must be one of the fastest selling phones in India right now. It is one of the cheapest full touch screen phones of any time (I paid Rs. 9550 inclusive of VAT) and it has enough features to attract the average phone buyer.

On the hardware side, the phone has good build quality and feels quite nice in the hands. It looks and feels like an iPhone to an extent. The resistive touch screen, though not in the same league as iPhone, is not too far behind either. It has actual buttons for volume adjustment, camera, locking the screen and call functions. The camera is 3.2 megapixels, but without autofocus and flash, can generate good photos only outdoors. The stylus is bulky and doesn't fit into the body of the phone, but there is no real need to use the stylus unless you are browsing the web. There is no wifi or 3G. I like the fact that the phone's battery is charged through the same micro-usb that is used to connect it to computer. However, I would have liked to see an independent audio jack.

I don't know what OS it runs. I suppose it is some proprietary one. The UI, though it feels very different for someone coming from an old Nokia, was quite easy to learn. The way to do a lot of things changes significantly (for the better) the moment you move to a touch screen. I think laptops will (and should) start shipping with touch screens soon. The applications provided with the phone are quite good. It has a document viewer that can read pdfs too, google maps, youtube, reasonably good web browser, facebook app, weather app and so on. The phone does a good job of playing music too. I have mostly positives about software on the phone.

Negatives on software side include OS crashes, especially when I had connected through bluetooth. I could not find many applications to download. It would have been nice to have a few more games on the phone, especially the ones that use motion sensing and gyroscope. I suppose the phone is still too new. The software they provide (Samsung New PC Studio) to make the phone talk to Windows computers is absolutely horrendous. They have made it unnecessarily complicated and seems to be quite buggy. The phone did not want to connect to my Linux box through USB until I put a memory card in it.

So I conclude that this phone is pretty good value for money and it deserves the tag some people have given it: "Poor man's iPhone".

Update:
I have one more good and one more bad thing to say about the phone.
Good: Camera. While I was unimpressed by the pictures I got indoors, I was able to get much better pictures in brighter conditions. Here are some proof:

Bad: Software installation. The phone supports Java apps, but there is no easy way to install third-party applications on the phone. I have googled for it and found that some people have installed Java apps successfully, but the procedure itself sounds like black magic and I have not succeeded so far. I wish there was an easy way to install Java apps using my PC.

Update2:
Some of the commenters have asked about the battery performance. I am not a heavy user of the phone. I talk may be 10-15 minutes on the phone every day, take 3-4 pics with the camera, play 10-15 minutes of games and listen to a bit of music. The battery is lasting roughly 5 days for me. Of course, the phone is still very new.

I have not attempted to connect my PC to the internet through this phone. Hence I don't know how well that works. I want to do the other way around, though. I want to connect the phone to the internet through the computer. However, this doesn't seem to be easy. Currently I use Airtel Live connection, which costs real money!

  3. BTW, what made you decide aganist the E63?

  4. Annie, if my prediction is right that is how the future is going to be. Get used to it :-)

  5. Chinmay, it was more about Samsung star winning the race than E63 losing it. E63 would have been a great phone, but the UI of Samsung star lured me towards it. Yeah, I miss Wifi.

  6. Hi Sripathi,
    Great post.
To answer your questions on which UI the Star runs on -- the Star comes with an updated version of Samsung’s well known OS TouchWiz interface. This latest iteration of the TouchWiz UI features the usual virtues of its predecessors, while adding some bling to it :-D

    Cheers,
    Team Samsung Mobile

  8. Hi Sripathi,
How is the battery performance ? In general, Samsung phones are known for their poor battery performances. But, Samsung STAR spec say that it has 10 hour talk time. Is it correct?

  9. Reply to "little master" from Mumbai:

I very surely have a document viewer that came with the phone. I have read pdf documents using it. I am not sure if there are multiple version of Samsung Star, I don't think so. Mine is S5233A, anyway.

Yeah, Samsung phones used to have limited battery life, but I think it has improved of late. I make around 4-5 calls per day, take 2-3 pics with the camera, listen to a little bit of music. I charge my phone once in 4 days. Of course, it is still a new phone, so battery performance is at it's best as of now.

  12. Reply to "sunny": Yeah, my phone too did not connect to Samsung New PC Studio through USB. I looked up their website and found a slightly newer version of the app (1.1.2.ID3) than what they gave on CD. I installed that and it solved this problem. Get it from here: http://in.samsungmobile.com/supports/softwaremanuals/software.do?phone_model=GT-S5233A&sw_type=SW

  15. hi sripathi,
i want to know does ur samsung star phone gets charged via pc if connected to the pc through mini usb..my point is that if i have to use the phone as a modem to use the internet for continuosly 12 hrs..will this be possible..(as the phone has a all in one jack)..it cannot be done unless the phone gets charged simultaneously via the pc while the internet is running.....
pls look into dis matter as my decision of buying dis phone depends on this...
    thanks

  16. Reply to Vaibhah:
Yes. The phone starts charging the moment I plug it into the PC through USB. Hence I think your need is met. The all-in-one jack is problematic when you want to charge it and use the headphone simultaneously.

  21. Reply to Ajay:
The touch screen has been working pretty well so far (around 2 months). No complaints. However, you can't expect the sensitivity of iPhone's touch screen from Samsung Star. I am pretty happy with the battery. My usage has come down a little now (just 3-4 calls a day and 15 minutes of music) and I charge it only once a week. The organizer is just okay. I suppose you can download a Java based organizer software and install. I have used the document viewer to view pdf files, but not MS-Office files. I am not sure whether it supports MS-Office documents. GPRS works pretty well. Google, GMail, Google maps, generic web surfing all work smoothly.

In my view, the advantages E63 has over Samsung Star are: 1) Wifi 2) Qwerty physical keyboard 3) Wider software availability, because it runs Symbian OS. Disadvantages of E63 over Samsung Star are: 1) Poorer camera quality 2) No touch screen 3) Additional cost, almost 3K 4) Smaller screen
    Thanks.

  23. Actually, on the CD (I suppose you all got one) there is another software which installs the Drivers for recognising the phone. The PC Studio is just to transfer files, install apps etc.
BTW I have SGH I450 and hence I wrote. If your cd does not have it, go to samsung site and get it.

  25. hi,
i have read your post and its awesome.covered almost all things.
but still i want to ask smthing which u missed

firstly howz the music quality [on the earphones and on speakers both]
Is it better than nokia music xpress editions or even comparable..

secondly can we see the movies in .avi format or we have to convert them

thirdly can we visit the sites like orkut and make replies easily and can we use gmail easily including the replies(sending mail)

    plz help
    regards

  26. 1 more thing

are u facing any kind of problems with this phone except for it doesn't install third party softwares easily

    ReplyDelete
  27. Reply to "Pong": Samsung Star S5233A does not have Wifi. There is a newer model in the market that has wifi, though.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Replies to Milan:
    1) I find the music quality alright. However, I am not sure how it compares with dedicated music phones. The FM radio is also decent in quality. However, the built-in music players don't have good support for playlists. I need to pull down some other music players and install on it. I am not really a music buff, so I have been putting it off.

    2) This phone stores movies in .mp4 format. I had not tried .avi files on it. I now tried playing an .avi I had recorded on my camera and it did NOT play. I need to figure out whether I need to convert these files or install some other movie player on the phone.

    3) I use Gmail app and it works beatifully. I have not used Orkut on this, but general web browsing works smoothly, so I think Orkut will too. I have installed Opera Mini browser as well.

    4) No other problems apart from what I have listed in my blog post and in these comments.

  31. Reply to Jonathan:
My model doesn't have Wifi, so I don't know anything about Wifi on this phone. For GPRS to work you would need your service provider to provide you connection information. If it is configured, you should see it under Settings -> Network Settings -> Connections. Once that is done GPRS gets used automatically when you try to browse the web.

  35. I purchased the wifi version i.e. S5233W of Samsung Star. It does not support 3G (there is a 3G version of star). So far my experience has been really good. I am using GPRS on it. Also connected it to my PC using Wifi...but I'm yet to manage to configure it to surf the internet through my PC's connection using the wifi. I need a better pdf reader. The existing one is not quite helpful in moving around the pages. Can anyone recommend a suitable pdf reader?

  41. Reply to Shamik Bose: Charging of the phone does not depend on Samsung PC Studio software. In fact I run Linux on my desktop most of the time, so I don't run Samsung software. This does not come in the way of charging through USB. Hope it helps. - Sripathi.

  42. Hi Sripathy,
Almost one year down the line... How is your experience? Also battery performance, touch sensitivity and most importantly, processor speed... is it slower??

    ReplyDelete
  43. Reply to Mesh:
Yup, nearing an year. No major problems to talk about, except minor inconveniences. The battery now lasts 3-4 days. I think the touch sensitivity has remained as-is. Is processor speed expected to come down? I didn't think so. In any case, I can't notice any difference on day-to-day basis. I will have to compare with a new phone to be sure.

    Minor inconveniences include:
*) I set memory card as the default memory. This keeps getting reset to phone memory.
*) The calendar is very very basic. It can't import entries from anywhere.
